Hello,
West Lothian Council Archives and Records Centre was created in 1996 when the Livingston Development Corporation records were transferred to the new council. We are not that well known however – so I thought I would post on here to make you aware of some of the services that might be of interest.

We hold records reflecting the history of both local government and the wider community. The archival holdings date from the 16th century to the present day and include the records of West Lothian Council and its predecessor organisations, the Livingston Development Corporation collection, poor law records and a number of private deposits including the records of Bathgate Forge Ltd.

Some of our most accessible records are the photographs taken by the Livingston Development Corporation as it developed the new town. There are thousands of these, of which around 900 have been digitised and added to Flickr – please do go take a look, if you are interested in old photos of Livingston these should suit! We add more to the collection when we have the time.

My own position is that of a project archivist and I am cataloguing the papers of the Livingston Development Corporation, and some other collections relating to Livingston. When the project is completed the catalogues will available online and the records available to anyone who wants to look at them in the archive search room. The archive of the Livingston Development Corporation contains information on nearly any aspect of Livingston history, and is a great resource if anyone is interested in researching Livingston at any point! We are found on Deans Industrial estate, are open to the public and free to use.

Finally, as part of my project I am writing a blog about "early" Livingston in the 1970s using archival records as a starting point. The blog will, over time, look at issues like dampness in the Craigshill housing, packs of stray dogs, the New Town Blues and the growth of community in Livingston, to name but a few.

More information on the archive can be found on our
(unfortunately limited) web pages:

Please get in touch using the contact details on the page. Thanks,
Aidan.
