Low Port Huts could be demolished in February

THE Low Port huts will be demolished next month by West Lothian Council if final consent is granted.

Construction services at the council have requested conservation consent to pull down the temporary buildings off Blackness Road in Linlithgow and if given, the work will take place in mid February when pupils are on holiday, to minimise disruption.

The Low Port huts, close to Low Port Primary, were built as temporary accommodation in the 1960s and in August, the council approved initial plans to remove them.

At that time, Jim Walker, executive councillor for culture and leisure, said that the buildings had been badly damaged the previous winter and were no longer viable to repair.

Extensive discussions were carried out with the groups who used the huts to ensure they could relocate locally.

Lochside Playgroup was offered alternative premises in Low Port Outdoor Education Centre from August. Low Port Out of School Care Club (OSCC) now meets at Low Port Primary School.

Other user groups who use the huts such as the Art Class and Embroidery Group were able to successfully secure alternative accommodation at other locations in the town.

This week, a West Lothian Council spokesperson said there were currently no plans to develop the council-owned land. The ground will be landscaped to what it was originally and it could be used for education purposes in the future.

Last March, the Journal and Gazette reported local concerns about the burgeoning rabbit population around the huts and surrounding gardens, but the council spokesperson said they were not aware of problems connected to extensive burrowing in the area.
